This site is the home of Nicolas Carter's music books. You can read the pages, play the audio and download the practice sheets without an account.

Hosting

Cloudflare delivers this site and processes connection information, including your IP address and the page requested, to deliver content and protect the service. This website does not set cookies or store a visitor profile. Connection information is used to deliver the pages you request and keep the service secure; for EU/UK data protection purposes, the basis is the legitimate interest in providing and protecting this service. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Analytics

Cloudflare Web Analytics is not enabled. This site does not load an analytics beacon.

Theme and audio preferences

When you choose a theme or change volume/mute, JavaScript can remember that choice in local storage on your device. The saved keys are stm-theme and stm-audio-volume. These preferences are not uploaded to us or used for tracking. Only a choice you make is saved; opening a page does not save a default volume.

Local storage has no site-set expiry. Choices stay until you reset them here, stop remembering them, clear browser site data or your browser removes them. Storage is separate for each site address: selftaughtmusician.com and a.selftaughtmusician.com do not share these choices, nor do different browsers or devices.

Use the controls above to stop remembering or reset theme and volume/mute for the current site address. Turning remembering off removes saved choices and keeps only the local stm-remember-preferences=off flag so the site can honor your objection on later pages. While off, theme and audio choices work on the current page but are not saved or restored between pages. Reset returns the theme to your device setting and volume to 100%, unmuted; it does not turn remembering back on. If browser storage is blocked, current-page controls still work. With JavaScript off, native audio playback remains available and these preferences are not read or saved.

Audio and practice sheets

The audio and PDFs are served from this site. No signup is required to listen or to download the single sheets and the worksheets.

Buy buttons

A Buy button uses the country supplied by Cloudflare for that request to choose an Amazon store. The site does not keep that country. Amazon's privacy notice applies when you follow the link to Amazon.

Email

If you sign up on the Newsletter page, your email address goes straight from your browser to Kit (Kit, Inc., United States), the service that keeps the list and sends the emails for us under its data processing terms (Kit’s data processing addendum). Kit records when you signed up and confirmed and, like most email services, may record whether an email was opened or a link in it clicked. Kit may store this data in the United States and other countries.

Newsletter processing is based on your consent. You are added only after you confirm your address from the first email. The address is used to give you the practice sheets you asked for and to send occasional emails about new audio, new sheets and the books, never sold or shared for anyone else's marketing. Every email has a link to unsubscribe and withdraw that consent; once you unsubscribe, you get no more newsletter emails. Withdrawal does not affect processing before withdrawal. To have your address deleted, write to nicolas@selftaughtmusician.com.

If you write to nicolas@selftaughtmusician.com, your message and address are used to answer you, on the basis of the legitimate interest in responding to your request. Cloudflare Email Routing forwards the message to a Gmail mailbox (Google), where it is kept and answered.

Providers and international transfers

Cloudflare, Kit and Google (Gmail, for messages you send us) operate internationally. Kit’s data processing addendum, section 5 describes its transfer mechanisms, including standard contractual clauses and the UK addendum where applicable. Cloudflare’s customer data processing addendum and privacy policy describe its transfer safeguards. Messages in Gmail are kept under Google’s privacy policy. Contact the address below to ask for information about the safeguards applicable to your data.

Retention

Your address and signup details stay in Kit while you are subscribed to the newsletter. After you unsubscribe, Kit keeps your address marked as unsubscribed so that you are not emailed again; ask, and we delete it completely. Signups that are never confirmed are deleted in a cleanup every three months, once they are more than 30 days old.

Messages you send us are kept while they are needed to answer you and follow up; once a year we delete messages older than two years, and sooner if you ask. Theme and audio preferences stay on your device, as described above. You can ask what information is held about you and request its deletion using the contact below.

Your rights

Where EU or UK data protection law applies, you may request access to your personal information, correction, erasure, restriction or portability where applicable, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. These rights have conditions and exceptions. You may withdraw newsletter consent at any time using its unsubscribe link or by contacting us.

You may also complain to the relevant data protection authority, including the UK Information Commissioner or your EU/EEA supervisory authority.

Children

The books for children are purchased and used with parents or teachers. Please do not send a child's personal information.
