Full book description

A note-reading workbook your child can do with you, ten minutes a day: 11 levels in one book, from the first white key to reading music with both hands.

Lots of children love the piano and get stuck on the notes. Five lines, four spaces, two clefs, and every note looks like the one next to it. That is usually where the practice stops. This workbook takes it one small step at a time. Each idea gets a short teaching page and an example you do together, then calm practice pages, usually with two short tasks or one larger activity, a page at the end of every level to show what they know, and jokes in every level to read out loud.

What's inside

  • 11 levels in one book: the keyboard, Middle C, lines and spaces, steps and skips, the treble and bass clefs, the grand staff, ledger lines up to High C and down to Low C, sharps and flats, and reading with both hands.
  • Landmark notes first: a few notes that are easy to spot, like Middle C on its own little line. Every other note is a step or a skip away, so your child finds notes by counting, not by guessing.
  • Five kinds of practice: name the notes, draw them on the staff, find them on the piano, match notes to keys, and note games such as note words and spot the mistake.
  • Large, clear music on a big staff, with plenty of room to write.
  • A progress chart to color in after every level, and a certificate at the end.
  • Every answer in the key at the back, checked note by note, so you can check each page together even if you don't read music.

For grown-ups. You don't need a music background to help. A short guide at the start shows how to use the book in ten minutes a day, how a level works, and what to do when an answer is wrong. A placement page lets a child who already knows the keyboard start at a later level. Everything works on paper: no app, link or video is needed.

Who it's for. Children of about 6 to 12 who are starting piano, at home or with a teacher. Younger children work along with an adult; older children can try a level on their own and check it with the answers at the back. It also makes a good gift for a young pianist.

Open the first page, sit down at the piano together, and find Middle C.
